Event/Project Theme/Issue(s) Addressed:
Nature. It amazes. It destroys. And further, we destroy it. The focus of this exhibition is on the beauty of nature as well as its potential for destruction from pollution to natural disasters and beyond. The works range from images of post Sandy to pieces that focus on the gulf oil spill to works that celebrate the beauty of nature. By juxtaposing beauty and destruction the show allows viewers to fluctuate between past, present, future, despair, and hope.

DESCRIPTION/SUMMARY:
The International Caucus of the Women's Caucus for Art was invited by the Wei Er Shen, President of LuXun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China to create an art-based cultural exchange and exhibition between artists and essayists juried through WCA and women artists curated in China. In addition to the exhibiiton, Half the Sky: Intersections of Social Practice Art included a sixteen member delegation of selected WCA members, thirteen of whom traveled to Shenyang for the opening of this exhibition and to participate in 2-3 days of interactive events with the Chinese artists and students of the Academy. The academy was interested in providing an opportunity for Chinese women artists to interact with artists from our organization, to learn more about feminist art history in the west and share their art with our artists. This project included the exhibition, four interactive events created by the US delegation, a round-table discussion for the US and Chinese artists, an official dinner with dignitaries and US delegates and an opening ceremony.
PARTICIPATION:
Juried Art: For US, 23 individual artists (video, painting, installation, social practice art documentation, drawing, photography, sculpture, mixed media), one collective, four sets of partners, one organization. For China, 23 artists.
Juried Essays: Four essayists for catalog
