"The First Supper" Exhibition Audience and Panel Discussion
Exhibit and Panel:
Two members of Women's Caucus for Art, one an Israeli (Shirley Siegal) and the other Iranian (Hadieh Afshani) presented an art installation entitled: "The First Supper" at MC Gallery in NYC. They had consulted with members of WCA on issues of peace, attended the UN High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace, and worked with RE:Artiste, a NY organization headed by WCA member, Natalie Burlutskakya, which advocates for, mentors, and exhibits international artists, to have the fist of many national and international exhibitions on the subject of peace. The focus was on women from warring countries, sitting together a a table with plates and cutlery full of images of Arab and Israeli women. They would share food and share ideas of what it means to come together in cooperation instead of conflict. After the art opening, a panel discussion explored issues of peace and war, and ways that women could work to find common ground of friendship and cooperation against the background of war and conflict. Along with the two artists, a Syrian dancer/choreographer, Florence Nasar, and Iranian filmmaker/dissident/activist Mahboubeh Abbasgholizadeh participated in the discussion. The exhibit and ongoing discussion are scheduled in the near future for Toronto and Oslo, and will continue to travel for years to come.
